Q: How can I get you to illustrate something for me/my company/my publication/my band/etc.?
A: Just shoot me an e-mail saying what you want, when you need it by, and what your budget is. If we can agree on all the terms, then it's a deal.
Q: How much do you usually charge for an illustration or a comic?
A: Prices vary. In order to answer that, I'd need to know what rights you wanted to buy, where it would be running, how many copies of the publication would be printed, what the deadline is, etc. For a good idea of what an illustrator typically charges, please check out the Graphic Artist Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines. If you're still not sure, you can inquire and we'll see if our figures match.
Q: How long does it take you to do an illustration/comic/painting?
A: It all depends on the deadline and the complexity of the assignment. Ideally, I would like several weeks to work on an illustration, but can do them in one or two days if necessary. Comics are hard to quantify as it depends on writing, how many panels, how much research is involved, etc. For my weekly strip, it usually takes a full day to write and draw. Paintings take considerably longer than everything else. Most take at least a month from conception to completion. My longest has taken four months.
Q: I have a website. Will you link to it?
A: I'm sorry, but I get this question a lot and in order not to hurt anybody's feelings by accepting some and rejecting others, I have a straight-up policy of only linking to friends and business acquaintances. However, I may in the future link to interresting things so this rule isn't set in stone.
Q: Well, can I link to yours?
A: Absolutely!
Q: I want to post some of your comics on my website. Can I do this?
A: Well, technically no, but you're probably going to anyway so I can't stop you and I really don't mind if it's only one or two. The only thing I ask is that, if you're going to post my comics, you have no more than three on your site at any one time and that you give a link back to my site and clearly identify the comic and the artist (myself) so that others who might enjoy my work can come to my site. If you want to advertise for my books as well, that would be super cool.
Q: How can I be a big comic star like you?
A: You don't want to be like me. Trust me. I know the life of a struggling, dirt-poor artist looks glamorous but, take my word for it, it's not.
Q: Well, can you at least tell me how to get published?
A: In order to do that, I'd need to know what kind of comics you do and what kind of market you want to be involved in. I'd have to have a very defined presentation of your work. My suggestion is to check out the AAN website for alternative papers if you do similar work to mine, or check out comic syndication for more mainstream work.
Q: Can you critique my work?
A: For the most part no. I'm usually too busy to, but I have made exceptions from time to time. Depends on my mood. Maybe you'll catch me on a good day.
Q: I wrote a comic. Will you draw it for me?
A: Sorry, but no. Comics are a very personal medium to me and I only draw comics that I write myself. Unless, of course, you're willing to pay me tons of money. In which case, yes. Yes, I will.
Q: How do I meet you?
A: Come to one of my signings or events! Check my news page often to see them listed.
Q: What's up with your TV show? I heard you were going to make a Mr. Wiggles animated show.
A: Well, I WANT to make an animated Mr. Wiggles show. I never actually said it was happening. Right now, I'm still working on developing it and writing a pilot so that I can pitch it to people and find an agent. It's been a slow process as I'm so busy with other things and I've had a bunch of stuff come up whenever I've set time to write it that have had a higher priority. Rest assured, it hasn't been forgotten. If you're a big Hollywood agent or producer, please feel free to get in contact with me. A little interest might grease the wheels of production so to speak.
Q: How can I get you to lecture at my school...come to an event...do a signing...etc?
A: Again, shoot me an e-mail. I'm all for it. Right now I teach at Parsons but am always up for a lecture or taking on other classes. |
