PROJECT DESCRIPTION : Young adult novel about a boy in the early 1900's who runs away from an orphanage when he discovers he is to be sold to a sweatshop. I found two separate black and white photos of a great backdrop of traintracks and a young boy who spoke to me in his heroic stance and combined them to make this image. I then added the tonality and digital muckiness to enhance it. Because of the first person narrative and the character and time of Billy, I went with a simple yet characteristic handwritten treatment for the book title and drop cap initials for the interior. The chapter openers are inspired by bulletins of the time period as well as circus advertisements which also figure prominently into the story.
