June 3, 2008 I'll be exhibiting at the MoCCA Art Festival June 7th and 8th in NYC. Stop by and say hi if you're attending! March 25, 2008 I'll be in Italy for the next two weeks and will not be taking on any new work while traveling abroad. For anyone who emails me, please note that I may not be able to reply back to you until I return to the US on April 6th. March 19, 2008 The Russian edition of Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles: Vol. 1 is available for purchase now! Also, my comic will now be appearing weekly in Rochester City Newspaper starting next week! February 17, 2008 If you're in Italy, check out my interview in this month's issue of Rolling Stone Italy. Or, for those who just want to peruse it on the web, you can see it in the "Press and Interviews" part of the About section of this website. Check out the cover of my Russian edition of Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles Vol. 1 over at Comics Factory. Currently hard at work on putting out Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles Vol. 3, here in the USA. Details over at my other site. December 16, 2007 Gah, I've been busy! First off, I've been doing character art the past couple months for the show Super Jail, which will be premeiring on Adult Swim early in the new year. I'm working on the first three episodes and will be finishing up mid-January. You should totally check the show out when it premiers because it's awesome! Secondly, my comic strip, Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles, just got picked up by CityBeat in Cincinnati, Ohio! The first comic will be running on January 2nd—my birthday coincidentally. I couldn't ask for a better present! Lastly, my Italian Mr. Wiggles book came out last week! You can check out ordering details from Internazionale's website here. October 16, 2007 3 books I art directed got accepted into the Society of Illustrators original art show for the best in children's book illustration: Fiona Loves the Night illustrated by Amanda Shepherd, Hansel and Diesel, illustrated by David Gordon, and Phooey!, illustrated by Marc Rosenthal. Very cool! October 8, 2007 Sorry I've been so absent from this site. I know, very lame. Over the last few months I finished a ton of book design projects and have been pretty immersed in comic and writing work. And I took a little time off for myself, which was quite nice. Starting at the end of this month, I'm going to be doing some character animation for the upcoming show, Superjail, on Adult Swim, working with the folk at Augenblick Studios. I've signed on for the first three episodes, but may stay on for additional ones if it works out and my schedule allows. I've got some comics in Awesome: The Indie Spinner Rack Anthology, debuting next weekend at SPX. Nothing new, but some work that hasn't seen widespread publication. If you're in NYC, there's going to be a book signing/release party at Rocketship in Brooklyn on the 19th at 8pm which I'll be attending. Drop on by, check out the anthology, and say, "hi." August 11, 2007 I just finished teaching a summer intensive over at Parsons. Good stuff! Check out this new full page Mr. Wiggles comic I did for Internazionale about his Roman vacation. The final is translated into Italian. Another Basta is out featuring some of my work. I think this this the fifth year I've been in their calendar? I love these books. June 20, 2007 For the first time, I won't be exhibiting at The MoCCA Art Fest. I needed a break from promotion and I don't have anything new to sell this year. However, I will be attending on Saturday as a regular convention goer so if you see me walking around and want to say, "Hi." be sure to flag me down. June 4, 2007 BEA was really fun! I did a write-up of it on the Mr. Wiggles blog. May 28, 2007 I'm going to be signing with Barry Yourgrau at BEA on June 1st from 12:00-12:30 at the HarperCollins booth to promote our book, Yet Another NASTYbook. May 18, 2007 Sorry for lack of updates. I've been spending a lot of time over at my other site, getting things up and running and trying to generate traffic. But things are stabalizing a little bit so I can get back on here while I have a breather. Over the past few weeks, I did a cover illustration for The Santa Fe Reporter and a cover and several spot illustrations for The Pittsburgh City Paper as well as continuing to do some book design/art direction. I haven't posted the illo's yet (still need to get files from the A.D.'s), but I did update my Design section of the site with a bunch of new books. There's still several more I need to add in the coming weeks once they hit the streets. Speaking of books hitting the streets, the book I illustrated and designed for HarperCollins is out now! To refresh your memories, it's called Yet Another NASTYbook and is written by Barry Yourgrau. It was just featured by Barnes and Noble as one of their Noteworthy Children's Books. It's available in bookstores everywhere. And in more book news, I'm thrilled to announce that there will be an Italian language collection of Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles comics published by the fine folks at Fusi Orari (according to my Mac translator, means "Jet Lag"). They are the book imprint of Internazionale, the weekly magazine who publishes my comic in Italy. The book will collect all of my comics that have been published in Internazionale. I started publishing there after Volume 2 of my books came out so this is sort of like the third volume, but the first for my friends across the Atlantic. I don't know an exact release date yet, but when I have more info, I'll let you know. April 15, 2007 Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles has moved over to its very own website at mrwiggleslovesyou.com. Come on over and join all the fun! I'm part of an anthology called I Saw You edited by Fart Party's Julia Wertz where each artist is supposed to interpret a Missed Connection posting off of Craigslist. The one I chose is called "Happy Birthday" and I posted it in my Comic section if you want to take a peek. Just finished a cover illustration for The Santa Fe Reporter that I'll post on the site in the next week or so. Wrapping up on a ton of book design too. March 26, 2007 I'm thrilled to announce that Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles: Vol.1 is going to be published in Russia by Comics Factory! Not sure on the exact release date, but it should be sometime this year. I'll keep you posted with more info as I know it. There's a new illustration for Baltimore Magazine I posted in my Art section. Currently hard at work on the Mr. Wiggles website. Hoping for a soft launch as early as next week to coincide with the 400th Wiggles comic (crossing fingers)! February 25, 2007 I posted a new illustration in my art section about lab grown meat that I did for The Utne Reader. Currently working on a fun illustration for Baltimore Magazine. Comiccon was fun. I'm pooped from it. February 11, 2007 For anyone in the New York area, I'll be doing a signing and panel at the New York Comiccon (nycomiccon.com for more info). We'll have some previews of Yet Another NASTYbook, which I illustrated and designed. It's a collection of short stories for young adults written by Barry Yourgrau and published by HarperCollins. I'll be at the Harper booth with Barry to sign on Feb 24th at 2:30pm. Can't remember how long the signing's for, but I'm thinking about an hour. On Feb. 25th at 1pm, I'll be part of the Attitude alt weekly cartoonist panel. It says it's all about political cartoons, but I've been told it's not. If you're going, please make sure to get tickets in advance since last year entry into the convention was kind of a nightmare. Hope to see some of you there! January 21, 2007 There's a new cover illustration I did for The Santa Fe Reporter posted in my art section. My second illustration about giant birds and buildings in as many months. January 7, 2007 In the hopes of meeting more 14 year old girls, I've finally jumped on the already-passed bandwagon and gotten myself a MySpace account. Please add me as a friend and stay up to date on any news stuff through there. I'm still figuring out how I intend to actually use the site, but that'll work itself out in time. In actual art news, I did something for Plenty Magazine and the Utne Reader over the Holidays and am currently working on a one-off comic for The Stranger right now. December 3, 2006 I put a few new books in my design section that just came out. Also put a new illustration up in my art section about a Turkey King Kong I did for The City Paper. November 20, 2006 Congrats to me! My illustration for the Electric_02 CD package got into the Society of Illustrators 49th Annual Exhibition! This is the first year I've made it into something other than the sequential category (incidentally, I didn't enter the sequential category this year) so I'm super psyched about it. And yes, I know it's lame to congratulate myself, but I've never pretended I wasn't lame. So there. I just finished an illustration for the cover of the Pittsburgh City Paper and am working on an illustration for PLENTY Magazine right now, as well as a host of freelance book projects I'm art directing and designing. Crazy busy at the moment and can't wait to take a break for the holidays. The reading of my obscene Mr. Wiggles comics I did last week at The Strand was fun, if not necessarily the right crowd for my work. I left many people in the audience thinking I was a gay, pedophiliac, murderous, rapist. And those were just the people who liked it. Of course, my hosts, Smyles and Fish, were gracious and very nice and funny and their pocket edition book looks like good fun. There's some pics of the event up on their site somewhere. Happy Turkey Day! October 22, 2006 I posted two new illustrations in my art section: one for PlanSponsor and one for Seed Magazine. I also reordered the art as well. Have a look! October 1, 2006 I'll be doing a comedic reading of some of my Mr. Wiggles comics on Oct. 9th at 8:30pm with a bunch of other cartoonists at Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction in NYC. Other confirmed cartoonists include Emily Flake and David Rees with more on the way. Stop on by and check it out! I'm going to be moving Mr. Wiggles over to his very own dedicated website in a couple of months and plan on having some advertising to help pay the bills a little. If you're interested in advertising on the site and would like to purchase some space for the site launch, shoot me an e-mail at mail@neilswaab.com and we'll work something out. Currently, this site is averaging around 60,000 unique visitors/month and I expect the numbers to be reasonably the same when the comic switches over so it will be good exposure. September 28, 2006 In some more great news, Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles has been picked up by the Newport, Rhode Island paper, Mercury! I'd like to welcome them onboard and thank them for publishing me! And, as usual, if you'd like to see Mr. Wiggles in your local alt weekly paper, please write the editors and let them know. September 18, 2006 Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles has been picked up by The Badger Herald out of Wisconsin! I'd like to welcome and thank them for publishing my little deviant teddy. I'm now inspired to start sending out my comic to other college papers. If you'd like to see my comic in your school's newspaper, write the editors and let them know! (And, while you're at it, if you'd like to see it in your local alt-weekly paper, write them too and let them know!) September 11, 2006 I'm sending out a new promo card in a couple of weeks. If you're an art director, creative director, editor, or any other kind of art buyer and you'd like to receive promotional mailings, give me a holler and I'll add you to my list. August 28, 2006 I posted the illustration I did for Baltimore Magazine in my art section. I just finished a quick illustration for PlanSponsor Magazine and finally completed all the art for the book I'm illustrating. It's called Yet Another NASTYbook by Barry Yourgrau and is the third book in the NASTY series (the second of which I designed). For this one, I did the design chores as well as providing over 30 spot illustrations for the cover and interior. It's due out Spring '07 from HarperCollins. August 20, 2006 I updated the design section of my website with some new books that are coming out shortly. August 13, 2006 I've severed my ties with Grand Design Communications. So, for all Mr. Wiggles licensing inquiries and opportunities, you can contact me directly from now on. August 4, 2006 I just finished working on illustrations for Seed Magazine and for Baltimore Magazine and am wrapping up work on the novel I'm illustrating. I did some updates to this site, added some more recent illustrations, and re-sectioned off my art portfolio. It was getting a little unwieldy. I decided to take down some of the more...um...adult work (basically the stuff in my used-to-be fine art section). Don't worry, it's not gone for good, just moving. I'm going to have another portfolio site to do more explicit, sexual, and violent work (all the good stuff!). I'll be setting that up sometime in the Fall. That will also be the home to more experimental things I'm going to be working on. I have some other small changes to the site coming in the next few months as well that I'm excited about. July 23, 2006 I posted the Village Voice illo. in my art portfolio. The one in the paper ran as a two color job, but this is the way it was supposed to have run. Currently working on an illo. for Baltimore Magazine and finishing up sketches on the novel I'm illustrating. July 17, 2006 I just finished illustrating my first CD cover! It's for the Australian company, Stomp Entertainment's EQ label. The CD is called Electric 2 and is the second volume in their DJ-mix series (the first being Electric, naturally). My art wraps around the front and the back and will also be used on the CD itself as well as posters and other promotional things. I'll post the illo sometime after the CD launches in September. Also, if you're in NY, you can check out a nice full page illo that's going to be running in this week's Village Voice on living rent free. June 13, 2006 MoCCA was a blast! I met many cool folks and got to hang out for a while with my fellow comics friends. I finally got around to picking up a copy of Charles Burns's Black Hole (got the complete edition). I've always loved his art, but never actually read his comics. And, yes, it definitely lives up to the hype and all the accolades. Awesome. In other news, I'm currently working on an illustration for PlanSponsor Magazine and some illustrations for a novel for a large publisher (I'll talk more about it when I can). June 6, 2006 Correction to my MoCCA schedule: I'll be at NBM's table from 1-2:30pm and 4-5:30pm both days. Probably hanging at the Parson table in-between the two times. June 4, 2006 I'll be exhibiting at the MoCCA Arts Festival June 10th and 11th at the Puck Building in NY. I'll be at NBM's table all day Saturday and sharing time between NBM's and Parsons' table for a good portion of Sunday. I'll have both copies of my books on hand to sell and sign. Stop on by and say "hi"! May 29, 2006 If you're in Seattle, check out my illustration in next week's Stranger. May 21, 2006 Check out my interview with Suicide Girls! (Not safe for work) Thanks to Daniel Robert Epstein for interviewing me! May 15, 2006 Thanks to Dirk Deppey, managing editor of The Comics Journal, for including my second Mr. Wiggles book in their Best Comics of 2005 issue! April 23, 2006 If you're in NY, check out my new illustration in this week's Village Voice! I'll post it to this site sometime in the next couple weeks. Also, thanks to Peter McCarty for inviting me to guest elcture in his class at SVA! April 2, 2006 I posted some new illustrations that I did for PlanSponsor Magazine and Global Custodian Magazine over the past few months. Check them out in the art section. In sad news, the Toilet Paper is ceasing publication and just going to web. So no more Mr. Wiggles in there since I'm already on the web. In good news, however, Mr. Wiggles celebrates his 350th! January 30, 2006 You can see the original cover art to my second Mr. Wiggles book on display at the Society of Illustrators starting February 7th as part of their Sequential Exhibit for the 48th Annual. I will be exhibiting with NBM at the NY Comic Con at the Jacob Javits Center from February 24th-26th. Come on by and say "hi!". January 8, 2006 Attitude Featuring: Neil Swaab, Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles has been accepted into The Society of Illustrators 48th Annual in the Sequential Category! There will be an exhibition sometime in February, I think. More info to come... |
